On Winners, Impermanence, and “Leaving”

When our coach called the team meeting, the mood was sad, concerned, and uncertain. Our football coach, Jim Harbaugh, left for Stanford University and took our strength coach with him. With uncertainty in the air, our head coach, Rich Hill, didn’t miss the opportunity for a teachable moment.

“Winners leave.”

I remember being surprised at his explanation for our strength coach’s departure. His point began to make sense and became foreshadow for the next few decades of my life.

As high performing people reach the edge of their contribution in any given situation, they often transcend their circumstances. In this case, “leaving” is good. Frankly, we all should take note, get used to it, and learn that change is inevitable.. especially if you’re a winner.
