Staff Members are Standing by for the First Good Excuse to Avoid GPP

I generally loathe looking or sounding “salesey,” but when you’re running a business in times like these you’ve got to do whatever it takes. I say all this because in my thousands of conversations with potential students over the years, I’ve heard all of the objections under the sun.

One caveat before we continue. I’m fully aware that the reason most people give to themselves and others to not exercise is often not the actual reason. Nonetheless, one I heard the other day made me chuckle.

“I’m just really getting serious about surfing.”

And, this makes me chuckle because two things emerge:

  • Training isn’t about preferences, and

  • The most serious of surfers would train for it.

Sometimes people project on us that they prefer other things. This presupposes that we’re doing what we’re doing in the gym because we prefer it – HA! Quite the opposite! If we were designing a program to be a preferred pastime, surely it’d look different.

Second, a beautiful note about General Physical Preparedness (GPP) is that it’s an important, relevant part of any goal. If you want to be the best surfer, rock climber, powerlifter, softball player, or accountant you can be, that goal will either be supported by or limited by your level of GPP readiness.

And, with that, do what you will.
