From 2021 to 2023, I missed maybe a hundred or more workouts. Here’s how the internal talk track went: “I know what I’m capable of and today I’m not able to do that. Therefore, I won’t train.”
Sure, there’s an unfortunate (or fortunate) reality with training that demands that the stimulus be (relatively) challenging enough to elicit an adaptation. However, volume is important, too. You can imagine how faulty the logic is to consider zero workouts at perfect intensity is not better than dozens of sessions with lower-than-ideal intensity.
This was my bullsh*t.
Now, I’ve shifted my view some. Sure, relative intensity is important. The body won’t react to walking around the grocery store as if it’s cardio. However, I’m now okay with less than optimal training sessions. Sounds simple (and maybe stupid), but it’s getting me to train with what I have when I have it and that’s 100% better than not at all.
Do you tell yourself a similar irrational story around training? Or, do you have a different racket?
