The old joke for catchers in the baseball community is that you “feel good” one game each year and that’s, of course, Opening Day. For the rest of the season, there’s always something. A foul tip off of the shoulder the night before is throbbing or a calf strain that won’t seem to go away… you get the idea.
The metaphorical highway that runs between life and baseball is a well traveled road and all lanes are open here. Let’s call it what it is. Being an adult comes with its fair share of niggles and your only chance at discerning whether you’re injured or you’re a normal, healthy human being is self-awareness.
Got a twinge? Chances are you’re a regular human experiencing being alive.
Now, this isn’t license to be reckless in the gym. It’s also not an effort to glamorize a real issue in the fitness community, which should “do no harm.” But, it’s also a call to reality.
One of the realities of engaging in the world physically is bumps, twinges, and niggles. You don’t need to call a doctor every time you feel something.
