Skill Transfer is Only Available to the Curious

I found myself inexplicably frustrated the other day. I won’t say it was frustration directed at a student, because it wasn’t. It was a frustration directed at a coaching situation.

At first, I couldn’t name why this moment frustrated me and, now, I think I’ve figured it out. You see, the glue that connects movement together is something called skill transfer.

The notion here is that if you move well (or in a transferable way), you’ll not just learn one thing when practicing a movement. You’ll learn an entire library of things. What I’m saying is akin to learning the alphabet versus memorizing words.

The student I was working with had a common worldview.

It was a quantitative one. It was “Squats are squats and ten of them is better than nine of them, etc etc.” When in reality, the skill-based view of movement says, if I can squat well or pull well or push well, I can do anything that’s related very well.

I’m not saying you need to walk in the door with the world-view… far from it. But, you will need some curiosity.

Can you handle that?
