You know that from-across-the-room-no-words-needed kind of mutual respect? It’s the best. I’ve found it exists in lots of disparate places, but the mechanics of why this respect works comes from the same source.
Jiu jitsu is a common place I witness this. Entrepreneurship is another. Professional baseball lockers rooms have it. And, I hear that skateboarding has it, but as a poser I can neither confirm nor deny.
I promise you the mutual respect in juijitsu has nothing to do with who can beat up who.
The source of his mutual respect is simple. It’s knowing that you showed up over and over and over again to a thing that occurred to you as a hardship. That’s it.
When you see a high-level belt Brazilian jiu jitsu player, it doesn’t matter who would win in a match. There’s a knowing that this person got humbled thousands of times and still showed up.
They say the same is true about mutual respect in skateboarding. No one gets a kick flip or 360 flip without falling… a lot.
And, that knowing is worth something.
I’m always hesitant around people who quit things chronically. If you want to build character traits that hold weight in the world, string together 10, 15, and 20 years with a craft. Then, do it again.
