I decided he was going to be a dick. In my defense, our first appointment wasn’t his best work. My new doctor didn’t have great bedside manner and by the time our second appointment came around, I had already mentally rehearsed how it was going to go. I knew how it was going to go because I decided all these things about him were true:
- He doesn’t like his job
- He’s arrogant
- He lacks patience
- He thinks I’m just a number
- Etc
And, then the appointment came and, frankly, he just wasn’t. He was pleasant and kind and, dare I say, funny?
Meanwhile, I can’t get back the minutes of my life I spent “knowing” this was going to be a miserable meeting. This was especially unfortunate because it didn’t feel good to make up all these stories about this guy and about how the future was going to go in such a downward spiral way.
This wasn’t my best work.
And, it’s a wonderful reminder that it’s never a good idea to let untested stories in your head of other people run amuck. Lead with grace and find out that you could be completely wrong.
