A posture of humility is recommended here. On one hand, the gym is the most egalitarian place in the world. You can’t buy or inherit physical capacity and the fitness qualities you do or don’t possess are your responsibility alone.
Nonetheless, the ego finds its way.
Soon the human ego will find ways to find superiority in the gym. For many adults, what used to humble them is now a part of their egoic identity. They start to wear badges like “I’m strong because I can power clean my bodyweight” or “I’m a badass because I can do a muscle up.”
What a shame..
While the opportunity of development, humility, progression, and presence to the moment is forever present in the gym, the ego can rob us of that. May this be a reality check that a bodyweight power clean is rather embarrassing at the amateur athletic level and while gymnastics skills on the rings are rated alphabetically to signify their difficulty (A is the easiest, J being the hardest), the muscle up doesn’t even register as a letter.
I encourage you to come to the gym for all of the aforementioned benefits, but be wary of your ego losing the plot. Keep going.
