Hamster on a treadmill? The human mind is never going to fall for that. There’s an important point of view that we hold a DEUCE that makes us different from most training facilities.
We believe in a skill-based view of movement.
Simply put, we understand that all movement is a skill and, if that’s true, then you can learn and develop movement skill infinitely.
Sounds obvious, right?
Maybe. Much of the fitness industry takes a purely quantitative perspective on movement. And, the running, cycling, swimming communities are the worst. Think about how many running groups, app, and programs are rooted in volume and nothing else. “How many miles did you run today?” or “What kind of milage were you doing each week to prepare for your race?” are questions that assume that milage is the important variable.
Surely, the yards you swim and the meters you run and the miles you bike matter, but how you run, bike, and swim is at least as important if the idea is that performance needs to be better.
Now, it’s less of a leap to consider this same skill-based view of higher skill movements in the gym, but all movement is movement and therefore skill is important.
For us, this skill-based approach isn’t just a matter of “form,” either. Skill is what changes this from a hamster-on-a-treadmill situation in your consciousness to a student-of-the-game consciousness.
I don’t think anyone can keep up with the latter indefinitely in the gym, but we all can embody a student mindset forever. And, that is what we think can hold your attention long enough to keep you in the gym for a few decades.
