Zero percent of you will be surprised by the bias of this article. Plus, one hundred percent of the people reading this sentence (especially those that live in Los Angeles) have financial concerns. Regardless, we can do a better job protecting the businesses that matter to our communities.
If not, there will be consolidation.
I’m generally a supporter of free markets. “May the best person win!” But, here’s the problem…
In times like this, where 100+ excellent restaurants are forced to close in a single year in Los Angeles, people who are taking on risk to be in business and are doing a remarkable job don’t always win. And, when they don’t win, venture capital and private equity come in and consolidate markets. Their long runways of capital can survive the economic ebbs that real humans with real checking accounts cannot. It means acclaimed, important restaurants like Birdie G’s are forced to close and we get more P.F. Changs, which generally is worse for all of humanity.
Fitness is no different.
If we want to see our favorite businesses survive, we’ll need to lock arms and support. It’s either that or live in a soulless wasteland of strip mall bullshit.
