You (and I) have an ancient, reptilian part of our brain that has one job: keep us alive. One of the more dangerous things to a being that’s trying to stay alive is uncertainty. The flip side of this coin is that since we ultimately are swimming in a soup of uncertainty, we do get to enjoy the freedom of freewill.
But, that’s another conversation altogether.
It’s a paradox, however, uncertainty feels dangerous. This means that we all are navigating a human experience that mandates some perceived danger.
To be human is risky.
This means the oldest parts of our brain are on the lookout to keep us safe at all times. This means you’ll likely do things consciously and subconsciously to avoid (the feeling of) uncertainty.
What can you do about this?
Notice it! If you’re not careful, this internal safety mechanism might be running your life without you knowing it. So, here’s the question:
What are your strategies (consciously or unconsciously) to cope with uncertainty?
Humans will choose negative (but certain and familiar) environments to avoid uncertainty, for example. We will diminish our potential to live a smaller, less powerful reality (that we know) than explore a bigger, more actualized reality that is unfamiliar, for another example.
What’s your thing?
