What’s Actually Different: DEUCE vs. a CrossFit Box vs. a Boutique Studio

When it comes to non-big box gym options there are two main camps out there: CrossFit gyms and boutique fitness studios.

DEUCE Gym falls into neither camp.

CrossFit gyms can be incredible places to train, however, it is very unlikely that the program will have thoughtful progression. One of three pillars of the CrossFit methodology is variance and that typically is too varied to see progress without world-class coaching. The typical coaching staff at gyms like these are part time, mercenary coaches who aren’t able to provide world-class support.

The typical boutique fitness experience, albeit HIIT, cycling, bootcamp, etc, will also offer a hard hour of training, but there is almost never a method to progress load, skill, or fitness qualities over time. In a worldview that emphasizes intensity for intensity’s sake, teaching movement feels “boring” or a “waste of time,” so these studios rely on the dopamine response of breathing hard and sweating with friends instead of instruction. Ironically, this is much more dangerous in practice than DEUCE Gym appears to be in theory.

At DEUCE Gym, we are held by a performance mandate. If the movement selection, training dosage, and program structure doesn’t drive improved fitness qualities, we don’t do it. That’s the case whether what we’re doing is popular or not. Our coaching staff has been through the most rigorous hiring process in the city and we’re proud to offer only full time coaching experiences here.

Training at DEUCE comes with the same rigor and standards of an NCAA weightroom that is presented to an inclusive and diverse audience. If you have a body, you are a perfectly eligible student here.
