Observing Lifestyle Models, Breaking Frames, and a Doctorate of Awe

We were supposed to be discussing the elements of writing movement prep sequences, but I had to stop Coach’s Prep. I told the class to turn around.

“You see that guy weightlifting over there?”

I continued to explain, “He’s a PhD in Speculative Literature.” Of course, no one knew what that meant. I sure didn’t until this gentleman told me. “It means he’s a doctor on the topic of fantasy, sci-fi, and super hero literature. Crazy, right?”

Everyone was flabbergasted. (And, that was my reaction, too, when I first learned about it.)

This competitive weightlifter (who moves beautifully by the way) was hiding the potentially most incredible thing about his life in playing sight. And, while that’s uniquely common at DEUCE Gym, I believe it’s important for human beings to see diversely remarkable models in the world.

When you see people living differently it breaks our frames of assumption about how a life ought to be lived. And, luckily for me, DEUCE Gym is an endless well of wonder and awe.

Humans never cease to amaze. And, if you don’t feel that, look for it!
