Your mind will actually do gymnastics to protect you. The problem is the protection it will do can get in the way of your growth.
We tell stories to keep us safe.
And, if you’re stories aren’t letting you hear and learn what you need to hear and learn, you might be held back by a protective mind. I’ll never forget what my Enneagram instructor, Russ Hudson, told us.
For those who don’t know, the Enneagram is an ancient personality-typing system that helps people make sense of our differences and unique dispositions. Therapists use it to aid their work and individuals use it as a tool to move through the world better.
Like any tool, humans misuse it, too.
The biggest mistake with the Enneagram (and any other framework or typing-tool) is when people use it to cover for their need to grow. “I’m an asshole because I’m a ITFJ,” or “I’m always late to work because I’m a waning Orange moon Aquarius rising.”
You catch my drift.
Russ would always say, “Assign yourself the Enneagram number you need to grow, not always the one that feels like the most you.” And, I appreciated that distinction.
