Creativity and the Idle Typewriter

To the amature, being busy is king. There’s a famous story of a 1940s era film studio tycoon walking past the writers’ bungalows only to be enraged because he didn’t hear any typewriters. Aghast, he declared that he was going to fire all the writers the next time he walked past the writers bungalow and didn’t hear the sounds of typing. After all, he’s paying them to write!

Legendary comedian Conan O’brien says “an uncreative person’s concept of thinking is constant movement.” Instead, O’Brien leans heavily on the loitering and the play and subconscious idle time as the most fruitful time to be creative. In his mind, the studio tycoon who was upset that he didn’t hear the typewriters didn’t know that the silence he was hearing was actually the most important creative time in the writers’ bungalow.
