The Ego Emerges Often (But, Do You Notice?)

You know that nervous feeling in your gut on test day from when you were a kid? I recently completed some professional development with some of the brightest minds in adult development and part of it was a test.

The hilarious thing is that the test is meant to be data collection for the work. I have when people reference things as “the work,” but here we are being contradictory and what not. In any case, the test isn’t a freaking competition, but there I was looking at questions trying to find the “right” answer.

Who am I competing against?

Why am I trying to look good? I’m allegedly here to get better, so let’s get better and getting better, right?

These human tendencies might be illogical , ego-based, and nothing to be proud of, but the human experience is riddled with silly behaviors like this. What should we do about that fact, you ask?

It seems like increased awareness and catching yourself before you’re an asshole is a good start. That’s where I’m trying to start, at least.

Carry on.
