“Be More Disciplined” Is Not Advice

I’ve been in this industry a long time.  14 years to be exact.  I;ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard things like “I know what I should be doing but I just haven’t been doing it” or “all I need to do is ______ but I just can’t seem to stick to it”

Insert 95% of trainers giving the groundbreaking advice:

“You just gotta be more disciplined”

Sure, this advice probably isn’t wrong, AND.. for the majority of the population, it is wildly unhelpful.

“Be more disciplined” isn’t advice – it’s the problem handed back as the solution.  Imagine going to a mechanic with a car that won’t start & being told the issue is that it isn’t starting.

Nobody is out here trying to be undisciplined.

Most people are really trying, they’re doing the best they can with what they know, & they just haven’t been able to fully figure it out yet.

When you work with enough people, you come to realise the answer here is almost never willpower.  Most of the time it’s preparation, time, energy – finite resources.  Careers, kids, commutes, a social life, a training schedule, a fridge that’s empty on the night you’re exhausted.

Sometimes it’s nervous system regulation – food, snacks, alcohol, doing a job that has nothing to do with hunger.

And more often than not, especially with women, the problem is that they’re not eating enough.

You cannot out-discipline an under-fuelled body running on empty.

If you’ve spent years being told “you musn’t want it bad enough”, & you’re out here still trying, you don’t need to be told to try harder.  You need someone to look at your actual week & build you something that works for you.

If that’s the bit you’ve been missing, this is what the next 4 weeks of the Nutrition Kickstarter are for.

Starts this week.  Reach out & we’ll get you sorted.

We’ve got your back.
