Identifying with what you do is a very dangerous habit. Avoid it at all costs.
While most people do this with their career (and we’ve heard about all that ‘doing vs. being’ stuff), but it’s just as critical when it comes to your gym life.
No matter how much you love the gym, I encourage you to maintain the posture that you’re a person who does gym things. “Hi, I’m John and I go to the gym,” is a fairly “safe” statement. Where things get dangerous, in my opinion, is when you start to say:
“I’m John. I’m a fit guy.”
Most people who identify with what they do get their heart broken. Two of the most famous ways to get your heartbroken when identifying with what you do is:
- Life takes you away from the things you identified with, or
- You find out that you aren’t actually as good at the thing you identified with at all.
Then what?
Remember, you’re just you. And, you’re a version of you that does things, plays different roles, and those will always be changing to some degree.
Hold your identities loosely.
