Combat Self-Loathing with Embodiment

If you’ve ever read How to Win Friends and Influence people, you know that human beings love to think about themselves. Carnegie offers the funny-because-its-true quip that every person’s favorite word in the English dictionary is their own name.

And, maybe that’s our problem.

It seems to me that the feeling of presence in the moment with our focus in a healthy, non-ruminating place occurs when we are embodied. It’s when we’re less in our heads and more in our body. It’s when you’ve got ten toes on the ground and you feel where you are.

That’s why training is such a helpful practice. It’s embodied. The same is true with meditation, breathwork, rich human connection, and the like. It brings presence without the self-obsession.

If your mental health is struggling, try to get outside your own self worship and get into your body.
