First and foremost, “don’t forget to like and subscribe!” That’s what has turned the gym experience into that scene in Mission Impossible where Catherine Zeta Jones and Tom Cruise have to contort their bodies to avoid the laser trip wire security system.
You’re in somebody’s shot today at most every gym.
However, as cringe as this influencer propaganda experience has become, not all tripods are wasted space. For a small percentage of movers, filming movement is a key part of the feedback loop of training with intention. This is especially true if you don’t have a coach present (and is even helpful when a coach is present).
Most of the population, according to Felder’s “Index of Learning Styles”, are visual learners. And, while auditory cues and tactile cues are helpful, almost every great athlete has supported their craft by seeing themselves move, usually by watching “tape.”
So, before we completely shame all tripod users in the gym, let’s have some grace for those who are the most passionate learners among us… tripods and all.
