Dialing in Asynchronous and Synchronous Work

The lowest hanging fruit in resolving your work frustrations could be this. Forcing yourself and others to work synchronously for more asynchronous tasks is time wasted and draining. The opposite is true, too.

So, what is the issue here?

Asynchronous work is work that can be done alone, on its own time table without real time collaboration. Email is a classic form of communication that is generally asynchronous because the sender and receiver are not bound to be present to the communication at the same time. Asynchronous work maximizes flexibility and supports more thoughtful communication. It does create slower feedback and more effort in dialogue. Asynchronous work generally requires high trust.

Synchronous work is work that occurs together at the same time. Meetings are a classic form of synchronous communication. This type of work is key for immediate feedback and back and forth creative discussion. Brainstorming occurs best here. This has obvious limitations in time and lacks freedom.

The key is matching the right work with the right style.

If you’ve ever heard someone joke that “this meeting could have been an email,” you have experienced the pain of asynchronous tasks being forced to be synchronous. Now might be a good time to evaluate what tasks and processes are synchronous and asynchronous in your work dynamic.
