The Skate Mantra that Makes for a Uniquely Inclusive Culture

I once spoke with a professional skater about what made the skating community so inclusive. When it comes to skating, you’ll see jocks, goth kids, punks, guys, gals, hip hop heads, and anyone else bonded by the craft.

This iconic skater offered that anyone who skates has fallen. Not only have they fallen, but they’ve landed hard, often, and still chosen to get up and ride again.

That’s a bonding truth.

Humans want to be connected and our shared skin-in-the-game seems like a wonderful point of connection. Frankly, this is true whether or not you both have a skateboard under your arm, too.

No one gets out of this life unscathed. The next time you look across the room at another human, know they’re choosing to get up with scabs and bruises just like you.
