Adam Sandler on ‘Becoming’ & Italian Tours

Who doesn’t love Adam Sandler? In his guest spot while hosting SNL, he did a brilliant bit that has a lesson for us all. The bit positions Sandler as the owner of a travel agency, Romano Tours. Each skit is a commercial for the agency that paints a compelling picture of their various Italian vacation packages.

But, there’s a caveat.

The caveat is that he feels compelled to remind his customers that the trips won’t solve all of their problems at home. He goes on to say:

“If you’re sad at home, you’re probably going to be sad in Italy.”

“But, remember, you’re still going to be you on vacation.”

“There’s a lot a vacation can do… but, it cannot fix deeper issues like how you behave in group settings or your baseline mood. That’s a job for incremental lifestyle changes sustained over time.”

You get the picture.

I mention this because I’m often surprised at how often people are derailed by the realization that where they want to go with their fitness (or otherwise) will only come when they become the change. It sounds corny, but it’s a profound difference than thinking something is going to happen to you and land in your lap.

You’re going to become it (or you won’t). Keep going!
