“I’m Not Trying to Be the Best at Exercising”

After years of life under his belt, he was nervous about joining the gym. As an avid rock climber and alpine skier whose “prime” was behind him, DEUCE’s newest student was concerned that the gym was a risky place. He already had two hip surgeries, a knee surgery, and a shoulder replacement.

The gym couldn’t be a place of pain.

It had to be a place of healing or this wasn’t going to work. While the conversation started with understandable trepidation, it ended in excitement. This new student and I aligned on an idea that I think is often forgotten in fitness. That, of course, is that the point of coming into the gym is to make your life outside of the gym better. We aren’t training to show off in the gym. We’re training to make life better when you leave

My challenge to you is to remind yourself what the push presses and front squats are for. It sure as hell isn’t for the sake of push presses and front squats, if you know what I mean.
