A Caveat to S.M.A.R.T. Goals

The kindergarten of goal setting techniques. Yea, I said it. You’re not blowing the doors off your life just because you drop something specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound on a piece of paper.

Nothing ever goes as planned.

That’s why some experts urge that goal setting improves dramatically when you plan for deviations from the plan. That’s right, for some, goal setting must include brainstorming of potential obstacles and ways to overcome them.

The logic is simple. Since nothing goes as planned, it pays to have some anticipation for when your journey to your next lofty goal isn’t a straight line. When such challenges are met, there’s at least a previously understood expectation for them if not a full plan to overcome the barrier.

If you want something in your life, see if you can set your goals by planning for trouble along the way. This will supercharge your S.M.A.R.T. goals!
