Fancy Gym Culture Makes Working Hard Socially Unacceptable

Sometimes I get away to train outside of the DEUCE Campus to get some headspace. If you’ve trained at DEUCE or at a coach-led performance gym similar, you might resonate with this experience that doesn’t seize to amaze me everytime.

It’s weird to work hard in a regular gym.

I don’t mean that in an elitist way or a judgemental way, it’s just a cultural difference that feels as heavily contrasted as any pedestrian cultural difference if found traveling to other countries.

Regular gyms feel like libraries.

It makes it such that you’d be rude if you were to work hard and that guarantees that folks won’t. I view this strictly as a cultural norm issue separate from methods or training styles, too. It’s simply that the ice hasn’t been broken on near maximal efforts in fancy gyms like the one I’m talking about and it creates an interesting dynamic where the patrons all follow suit.

It’s from this perspective that I’m thankful for the noise and effort that is so normalized at 110 Lincoln.

Keep going.
