Here’s what the newest wave of research and field insight keeps reinforcing: the sex difference isn’t as simple as “women need warmer, men need colder.” When scientists control for body fat and body size (surface area-to-mass), the predicted cold response starts to look a lot more like physics than gender. Still, patterns show up: women often cool faster in cold water, especially lean women, because of differences in body size, composition, and heat production. And, women tend to feel colder at the same temperature, with thermal comfort also shifting across menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause.
