There’s a powerful drill we run in Coach’s Prep – one that has nothing to do with lifting, and everything to do with expanding how we think.
It’s designed to stretch your perspective, quiet your ego, and strengthen your ability to grow. The exercise is simple, but not easy. You start by writing down something you believe to be true. Then you ask the question: “How might I be wrong about this?”
That single question can crack open an entire new level of awareness.
For example, a coach might write: “You must be able to do a strict pull-up before you kip.”
That’s a common belief – logical, even. But when you challenge it, you’re forced to step outside of your own bias and search for counter-evidence.
Could there be situations where learning to kip first builds confidence, momentum, or a sense of belonging that keeps an athlete engaged? Could it help them feel what it’s like to get their chin above the bar so they’re motivated to keep going?
Now, instead of holding one rigid, dogmatic belief, the coach has a more flexible, informed, and open perspective.
The drill is a powerful one to run in other areas of your life too 😉
Growth doesn’t happen when we double down on being right. It happens when we have the courage to ask better questions – and stay open to the answers.
