Hot Take: Lifting Barbells with an Attitude

I remember falling in love with weightlifting when I saw the professionals who lifted with attitude. At the time, there was a movement of sorts at Cal Strength where several lifters under Dave Spitz emerged as America’s finest lifters. Their nickname?

Attitude Nation.

I obsessed over every new YouTube video of Jon North slamming bars or Donny Shankle cleaning bars like he was pulling the head off a goddamn lion. I was deep in the weeds of weightlifting technique, but this was something more.

Then, twelve years ago, maybe nothing taught me more about the precision and violence of weightlifting than the day Finnish weightlifting sensation Milko Tokola’s Max Training video came out. He sounds like a rabid wolverine and there is zero decrease in speed on a single lift. I’m still floored watching him!

Let this be your reminder. There’s always 1) what you do and 2) how you do it. Remember, weightlifting is at least 60% attitude!
