Pacific Coast Highway will never look the same. Anyone who knows me knows I take pride in taking Tuesdays off to go to Malibu. Last week was my first time driving up since the horrific Palisades Fire that destroyed thousands of homes and an entire community.
America’s most iconic driving route looks dystopian.
While it’s powerfully sad, I was struck with a confronting truth of the human experience. One of the natural tendencies of our reality is a lack of control and, therefore, volatility. No one could have imagined the timeless coastline views and homes that were synonymous with PCH would ever go away.
In reality, that’s all we should have expected… eventually. Mathematician, options trader, author, Nassim Taleb, said it most succinctly when he said:
“In probability, volatility and time are the same.”
This isn’t a call to turtle shell up, but instead to understand, embrace, and prepare for change. It’s coming!
