Leadership: What’s at Stake

Maybe the best way to talk about the importance of leadership isn’t by highlighting all the cool things that are possible if you choose to step into leadership. Instead, maybe the power lies in naming what is at stake if we don’t embody leadership.

What’s at stake is clear.

Without embodying leadership, we cannot perform our best, most meaningful work. Second, we will miss our chances at life’s most meaningful relationships.

That’s a profound hypothesis, so maybe we should quickly clear up what embodying leadership would even look like. Behind the scenes at DEUCE includes a very specific culture of development that has a point of view about leadership and a very clear definition. To be in leadership is to be accountable to the results.

You might be able to avoid choosing leadership, but you’ll have to give up a chance at your best work and deepest relationships to do it. In fact, the vulnerability in going to the edge of your ability is required for best efforts in work, life, and sport. Similarly, life’s most meaningful connection in relationships requires a similar vulnerability.

Leadership is vulnerable. Let’s choose it anyway.
