Exercising Empathy: Setting the Table

There’s a framework we reference in our leadership teams called the Five Perceptual Positions. The utility in the framework is especially helpful during disputes or in a negotiation of some kind. Ultimately it’s a helpful tool because it aids in one’s ability to aggregate a more complete understanding of the “truth” by taking on the five perspectives present to any given situation:

1.Self
2.Other
3.Observer
4.Group
5.Source

We often comment that “Self” is a perspective that’s most overused as most never leave their own viewpoint. Things get difficult the moment we need to depart our biased frame and attempt to take on another perspective without our own personal baggage. 

If you’re looking for a real-time way to practice understanding another’s viewpoint, take a role of service. In the most rudimentary fashion, invite a few people you know but aren’t incredibly comfortable with into your home and serve them. Literally, set the table. Make them a meal, seat them, and do your best to provide them the best experience you can. 

NOTE: it’s impossible to do this well from the viewpoint of Self.

Hopefully you’ll find yourself powerfully curious about what they’re experiencing, what’s making them nervous, what would put them at ease, and even what they might want to drink.
