The Ride Home is Always Easier

In 2006, I found myself lumbering down the highway in an ancient tour bus with no air conditioning. Our destination was Witchita, Kansas. It was summer. There was no air conditioning. And, I shared a pair of seats in a row with another large framed teammate.

It was a hellacious sleep deprivation chamber of a ride for 1,500 miles.

We were on our way to winning the organization’s first collegiate summer ball national championship in a grueling 10-day tournament in the heat. But, we didn’t know that yet.

What we knew was heat, frustration, poor food, and minimal sleep. Without being dramatic, that bus trip was brutal. I did notice, however, that the ride home was much easier to ride out.

And, there’s a theme here in life. The uncertainty of when struggle will be over tricks us into more suffering. The 4-mile run around the neighborhood is much more mentally difficult when you’re running away from home than it is running towards home even when it’s the same two miles back.

It’s not just a bus trip to Wichita thing. It’s a life thing I think. The ride home is always easier, y’all, so if you’re on a rough ride away from home. Sit tight. It gets better.
