When It Comes to Results, Attention Won’t Help

I’d have endless funds if I had a dollar every time I evangelized about seeking process orientation over a result-based orientation.

So, you got a dollar?

Anyone who is a jujitsu practitioner knows that it’s a fruitless (even painful) experience to begin wondering when you’ll get promoted to a new belt. It’s a classic case. You start theorizing dates and then those dates come and go without a promotion and then you’re heartbroken (and, frankly, distracted).

It’s almost magical that when your mind departs from the outcome (being promoted to a new belt) and starts to become entrenched in the process (showing up to be a great student of the craft), that the outcomes start rolling in.

Your time in the gym is the same. Imagine how sad and frustrating it would be to run to the mirror everyday after training to check on your belly fat. That’d be horrible and you’d likely quit. Instead, if you become immersed in the training in a way that you build the capacity your looking for in the mirror, you’ll both get your result and spare yourself the heart ache.

Where’s your attention?
