It’s understood that at least as long as 5500 years ago, cold immersion was intentionally used by humans. It’s also believed that over 4000 years ago the first saunas were built in northern Europe. Surely, they weren’t listening to Andrew Huberman back then, so what gives?
The richest human experiences are in close proximity to our physiology.
This statement is only more true as modernity pulls us away from our physiology. When’s the last time you felt intimate with your physical body and the physical environment? In a curated, temperature controlled world it’s almost foreign to the modern human to be gasping for air, in complete zen, extremely hot/cold, or supremely focused. This is intimacy with our physiology and we aren’t doing it.
Part of the many reasons why exposure work, whether hot or cold, is so important and prevalent today in health-conscious subcultures is that it immediately brings us face to face with our physiology.
How’s your relationship with your physiology?
