Revisiting Delayed Gratification: Marshmallow Mafia

Unlike the movie industry, it’s exciting when the science community revisits old concepts. That’s right, this article is NOT about Aladdin 3. It’s a fresh look at the classic psychological experiment known as The Marshmallow Test

You’ve seen the footage.

The experiment that has been repeated for dramatic effect places a young child in a room seated at a table. Soon a proctor walks in with a plated single marshmallow. The task? If the child can wait without eating the marshmallow, they will be rewarded with two marshmallows.

It is supposed to be a look inside of delayed gratification

Well, a recently published study in the Royal Society Open Science journal, examined this dynamic with the added twist of another child! As you might expect, the accountability of a partner who vows to also help out improved the children’s success rate in waiting to consume the treat.

You know it, I know it, and the Royal Society Open Science journal knows it. We do better with each other.

The million dollar question is: who is your accountability partner?
