A Magician’s View on Search Engines

Have you ever caught yourself despising someone that “knows it all?” I genuinely don’t think the world is ruined by people who think they know everything.

We have a different problem.

The opportunities afforded to us with technology in the information age doesn’t create a problem, in my opinion, of disillusionment that we know everything, it greats disillusionment that we could know everything. There’s a certain swagger that comes with the statement, “I can Google it.”

Some things can’t be Googled and, worse yet, the assumption that we can is what can get us most into trouble. I’ve been reading a memoir recently of a successful magician and he may have said it best when he said we are “shrinking our world down to our certainties.”

I wonder if the better assumption is what things can’t we know. There’s plenty of wonder and infinite potential in the world, especially if you spend less time on the internet.
