Inside the Mind Blowing Life of Working at LAX

Anytime I’m in an airport terminal I get curious about the people who work there. My mom was a flight attendant for roughly fifty years, so I don’t mean the folks in those roles. That lifestyle is intermittent. What I’m thinking about are the people who work in the retail stores and restaurants daily. What is that life like?

Just recently in conversation I found out what it’s like.

My friend spoke with an airport restaurant employee at LAX and asked where she lived. “East LA,” she said. Knowing it’s a tricky commute, my friend curiously asked how long her commute was. “It’s three hours on public transport,” she said. “I woke up at 2am to be here for my shift.”

I don’t know about you, but that was enough of a perspective shift for me. She’s been working at LAX for nine years.

Maybe we can start our gratitude early.
