The Unknowables

Considering I stole the diagram below off of the internet with a simple Google search, it’s safe to say that this concept can deployed in many more arenas that just fitness. Nonetheless, as you’re reading this there are things you know about fitness (resistance training builds strength). There are also things you know that you don’t know about fitness (the intricacies of hormone regulation after training). In addition, there are things you might think you know about fitness (like that there is allegedly something about eating protein to build muscle). fitness knowledge

Simple enough, right?

Well, my handy stolen pie chart here includes an area (the largest) that represents the things about fitness that you don’t know you don’t know. Reread that. These are things that you A) don’t know and B) aren’t aware of the fact that they are unknown to you.

This is tricky.

As a coach, I find that this area is the most exciting and transformational. Most people that join the gym simply think they want to look, feel, or perform different. In their minds, this is another tool to chip away at the damage of their lifestyle and if they sweat enough sweat and burn enough calories, they will accomplish their goal.

What most don’t know is that all movement is a skill. Skills we can improve and if they move better they will feel better. If they move better they can increase their potential to do work. Increasing this potential gives them freedom to progress faster, safer, and longer to their goal(s). Yet, who would one know that any of this is in the cards to begin with.

This is why we think we need more cardio, longer training sessions, smaller portions, and a host of other things that don’t directly speak to what we really want.

know if you give it time, however, you’ll come to learn this for yourself. Maybe what you don’t know you don’t know is that you can live and breathe inside a lifestyle chasing skill and more fitness capacity and enjoy the process more than you could ever enjoy the end results. That is a powerful mindset that is greater than any gift a coach could give. The crazy thing is that there’s no way you could ever know that until you stepped foot inside DEUCE Gym.
