1/14/20 - Your Little Demon & My Little Demon

How interesting, that so many of us attempt to rationalize shortcoming(s) as “I get in my own way,” or some degree of “I’m my own worst enemy” … when really, it’s not the minority of people saying this, but the majority.

Like small-talk musings on the weather, perhaps it’s time to upgrade the all-too-automated, currently normalized script that identifies and proclaims our own self doubt as valid. You know the one I mean – the one that seeks to excuse us for not pursuing what it is that we wish to do, to produce, to achieve.

A gentle reminder: self-doubt is part of the gig. That’s right. Your little demon is just like my little demon.

So, maybe the next time you hear someone say, “I get in my own way,” avoid the temptation to simply acknowledge (and inadvertently enable) their self-doubt. Provide better support — support with constructiveness — by responding with questions that don’t legitimize labeling doubt as a solution for dealing with it.

Questions like, “What’s one small step you can take right now to make progress?”

Or even, “How is worrying helping you move forward?”

Greet your inner demon like an expected dinner guest, and charge on. Remember that self-doubt isn’t a valid excuse to not go for it. It never was.
