8/5/14 - The Body Awareness Feedback Loop
If information is power, it seems that leaving the “body awareness button” turned on during workouts is advantageous. Surely, this attention to what you are doing and how it feels is happening during drills and practice time, but what about when “3, 2, 1, GO!” happens? Are you aware then?
When it’s time to perform, one can fall victim to thinking that sounds like, “Practice time is over. It’s time to go!” This is a problem if you understand performance and ultimate body awareness as two separate things.
Think about any act we do as humans. We need feedback. If you turned in a book report in middle school and never got a grade until graduation day, after turning in dozens of similar assignments, you’re progress would be blunted by a lack f feedback. It’s the same reason that games work so well and are so engaging. Scoring methods and even sights and sounds let you know good, bad, better, or worse.
We are guided by feedback.
Therefore, it’s critical to keep your feelers out for feedback in your movement at all costs. This training experience is much less about being perfect as it is being able to make adjustments from moment to moment. It takes paying attention and body awareness to make that possible, so plug in!
