11/28/13 - Thank You from DEUCE Gym

**Gym Closed Thursday-Sunday for Thanksgiving**

If you’ve spent any amount of time at DEUCE, you’ll understand when I say we’ve got a family vibe here. This isn’t a place that one can duck in and out of. People notice each otherPeople are invested in each other. There’s more than sweat that bonds these relationships and it’s during the holiday season that this is most apparent.

Dozens of hugs and well wishes filled the gym after each class today. And, I looked on, as did the other coaches, with pride and admiration at the community here doing what it does best.

I couldn’t be more grateful for you all. From the students, both new and season veterans, to the staff that sets the tone from the top down, I thank each and every one of you for making DEUCE a place worth writing home about.

I know I speak for everyone when I say that my mind will be with all of you over Thanksgiving. Thanks for showing me greatness at 110 Lincoln everyday.

When folks inquire about the gym and express a hectic work or travel schedule, I don't get discouraged. I get excited. I get excited because I know that our structure offers an opportunity to stay plugged in where nearly any other gym or fitness opportunity does not.The fact of the matter is, whether you have an erratic wor ...

The Other Edge

I recently had a conversation that distinctly reminded me of "the other edge." It's an interesting application of the metaphor a "double-edged sword" that became very apparent to me today. Many of you may know the person with which I had this conversation, but for privacy I will leave him unnamed. I called to ask him how he ...

[VIDEO] There’s No Trying in CrossFit

Wait, that's not right. Of course there is. Trying, as a matter a fact, is a huge chunk of what this is all about. Think about how many different skills and demands we encounter in our training. There's an element of newness in almost every single class. So, if you've got an aversion to trying new things, we've got to nip ...

You know, I'd be one mediocre coach if all I did was talk about squats all day. At the end of the day, we're coaching a lifestyle of ownership, commitment, and productivity around here. Much, if not most, of that happens between the ears, I might add.The changes that happen inside athletes at DEUCE include gaining muscle, l ...

OK, we don't actually have a rug here. So, what? Nonetheless, I was doing some cleaning the other day, and I found myself on my hands and knees cleaning the bathroom floor. As I made my way around to the back of the toilet, I asked myself whether or not I should move the the plunger, move the second plunger, and move the t ...

I'll never forget the time I asked my Spring Training roommate, Sawyer Carroll, why he didn't do much extra hitting, especially during a slump. You see,  though mental prep was a massive part of my game, I was the type of player that wanted to have more work under my belt than the next guy. I came before "early outs" and t ...

[VIDEO] Coaching with Style

Nov

2013

We often talk about with our coaches (and our student coaches) that having genuine style is critical. If you aren't you when you coach, it's difficult to express your potential, in my opinion. Plus, that fake stuff shines through. Coaching aside, I guess we all could benefit from having our our own style and not trying to m ...

The Team Sport Element

Walking through the gate at 110 Lincoln Blvd, we all feel a bit of those tingly, sports-related feelings. A couple things are inevitable, one of which is that we have some work to do. The other is that the work will be done with an element of each otherness with an attempt to do it well, just like in any team sport. And, I ...
