10/16/15 - We “Can’t Even Deal”

In fairness, the title is only a slight jab at the common figure of speech employed by stereotypical young urban professionals (especially in Los Angeles). “I can’t even deal,” is a social phenomenon that’s obviously grown beyond the literal meaning of the words in the sentence. I’d argue, however, that age and genera aside, we’ve become much less capable of “dealing” as a community.

Microcosmic examples of this are everywhere from the infamous divorce rates we observe to the attention spans that used to be as long as an episode of Fresh Prince of Bel Air and has shrunk to a place where a full fifteen second Instagram video is too much of a time commitment. We’ve normalized ejecting ourselves from enduring situations.

It’s only natural. You can’t really blame us as we, like water, will generally flow towards the path of least resistance. On the flip side of the same coin, realize that we are also conscious beings. We can gravitate towards easy but still choose hard.

If you, like most, “can’t even deal,” you might want to suck it up and learn how. Sit in the ice bath longer. Run further than you want to. Fix a relationship before you quit it. Live beyond convenience, and do it for no other reason than the alternative is a weak, ignoble existence.
