8/21/19 - Multi-Tasking is a Myth

We take pride in it don’t we? How many spinning plates can you keep up in your life? While we’re all doing more with the same general attention span, it’s not for the better. Focus, after all, is a key ingredient for not only our best work, but also our most fulfilling work. Plus, multi-tasking is a myth.  

That’s right. Multi-tasking doesn’t exist.

It doesn’t exist in the way you think it does, at least. Surely, you can calculate the tip of your dinner bill in your head, hold a conversation with your friend, and brainstorm the location of where you will go for dessert, but you just can’t do it at the same time. In reality, multi-tasking is a rapid switch from one task to another. You move the decimal point over on your dinner bill then respond to your friend then list two ice cream places in your head then you multiply the number on the bill by two then you listen to your friend and then you finally remember that third ice cream place you’ve been meaning to try. 

If we can view multi-tasking for what it is rather than the myth that we can do multiple tasks at once, it may bring awareness to a life of more focus. I’ll venture to guess that maintaining a singular focus is likely the lowest hanging fruit to separate your work from the pack in 2019. 

My challenge to you is to find places where you can do fewer things at a time more deeply. Who’s in for so hyper focus?
