It’s been said that the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia once took the tour bus to the Watt’s Towers in Los Angeles, where he had a profound acid induced experience at the site. The towers, which have become a notable attraction in Los Angeles, were built by Sabato Rodia out of rebar, steel, concrete, and scrap glass and tile as an artistic work. It took him more than 30 years to erect the towers.
After Rodia’s death, the City of Los Angeles attempted to bring the towers down citing the incomplete permitting process with Rodia and the potential hazard to the community they could become. The city ultimately forfeited its effort to destroy the towers once they realized it’d be easier to “sanctify” instead.
This impacted Garcia immensely with the following take away, “If you work by yourself as hard as you can every day, after you’re dead you’ve left behind something that they can’t tear down.”
How’s that for inspiration?
