12/3/18 - Number Two Thousand

I’ll never forget dropping in to a class in 2011 to CrossFit Central’s one of five locations in Austin, Texas. At the time, Danny and I were schlepping barbells out to the park hoping folks would show up for makeshift fitness classes. The founder of CrossFit Central, Jeremy Thiel, happened to be coaching and he introduced me to the class. “Logan is here from the Fake Gym,” he said ecstatically referencing the name of our park program, “and they are changing the game out there in California.” He was a fan! One the people I looked up to most in the industry was reading the blog! While I was humbled beyond measure, I knew we were on to something.

Flash forward to the last couple years. I’ve found myself teaching seminars on three different continents and nine different countries and I can’t tell you the number of complete strangers that have approached me about how much they get from reading the blog.

Since the first blog on April 24, 2011, the members of this community have been greeted with a daily article five days a week during normal business without exception. This is the 2000th article since.  There have been crazy insights into nutrition and articles that been shared thousands of times that shook the fitness world and everything in between.

Since delivering two thousand efforts of anything is remarkable, I figured I share three things I’ve learned from this process:

  1. Excellence is built on the mundane. Show me a place where this isn’t true. I’ll wait. Do. The. Work.  Because, despite your feelings (and my feelings) about it. There’s no other way to get to the places your heart truly wants to go.
  2. Writer’s block isn’t a thing. Neither is natural writing talent. I promise I’ve looked at a blinking cursor at 10pm at the end of a 15-hour day with an alarm set bright and early to tell you anything other than deadlines make shit happen. Every day, people tell me how they just can’t stay consistent or they don’t have ideas. Business and even this blog have both taught me that if you put yourself in a place where there’s no other option, you’ll get it done some how, some way.
  3. Pros are rare. In a world where people are crying for distinction, most choose a common existence and hope to be considered rare. The easiest, most egalitarian way to be rare is to be unwaveringly committed. Pros do the work whether they feel like it or not. Remember, lots of people start things, but few see them through.

I started this blog in 2011 because I knew there was no way that I or anyone else could tell you everything we had to say in a sixty-minute gym class. I’ve always said you’d be better off reading the blog everyday and training sometimes than you would be training every day and not reading the blog. I stand by that two thousand articles later.
