Wearing the Bullseye

A life of integrity is most simply “the hard way.” If you claim big integrity, you’re also claiming big scrutiny. It’s how it has to be. It’s only natural, too. Think about it. No one cares if the charbroil burger joint on the corner is cranking out unhealthy meals. That’s what they do. But, once you claim a higher level of accountability or integrity, however, you’re under the microscope.

Case and point, Ralphs can sell GMO foods and not not catch too much flack. They can do this mostly because they don’t claim to be a leader in health and nutrition. Whole Foods, on the other hand, is forever under scrutiny, because they claim a higher level of integrity for healthy eating.

People will always call you out for claiming to be something that you aren’t.

Let me be clear. I think claiming a higher level of integrity is critical. Hell, the greatest challenge in life is claiming the highest level of integrity, in my opinion. It’s worth mentioning, however, that doing so will put a bullseye on your back.

Wearing that bullseye is hard. You can either hold your word, or crash and burn. In our society, there’s no shortage of people looking, hoping, and wishing for you to fall from grace. For example, if you’re Johnny Health Nut, your peers can’t wait to catch you with a milkshake in your hand. If you’re ultra religious, folks will be sure to point out your sins. It’s the name of the game.

I’d like to say that I welcome a bullseye on my back. Please hold me to that. As a matter of fact, I’ve got an extra bullseye right here…
