Vulnerability: Node of Connection

There’s a connecting element in people that I find to be almost universal. We all want to feel powerful and safe and free to shine our brightest. Subconsciously, then, we become fascinated with and attracted to people that live in that expression. We want to be near the versions of life we want to live.

This belief isn’t new for me, but it was reinforced this past weekend as I was speaking to an eclectic group of people in Vancouver about my book, Going Right. The head nodding and feedback from men and women from various walks of life rallied behind the seemingly universal truth I’m proposing here that vulnerability connects us.

It’s the reason why there’s something significant about a friend who’s doing a challenging endurance race and you might feel compelled to watch and show your support. Surely, you may want to be in service to your friend, but I hypothesize that some part of that propulsion mechanism is an attraction to their vulnerability. We support what we want for ourselves.

If this hypothesis is true, the vulnerable pursuit of our edges is not just a catalyst for our individual growth, but it’s also a node that casts a network of support and inspiration for others to do the same. In short, vulnerably shining your brightest gives permission to others to do the same.

I can only hope that you’ll heed my advice to be as contagious in this way as possible. It’s your turn.
