Incremental

How do you think about your life? Timewise, I mean. Do you think by the hour, by the day, by the week, by the month, maybe by the year, or is there a rhythmic cycle that you follow? We all have different ways to get things done, and some may be effective and some may be pretty damn near worthless. I have been a part of both ends of the spectrum here.

Since being bestowed with Dadhood, which is the greatest gift ever by the way, I have become very incremental. Down to the hour, to the minute, and even down to the second sometimes. Efficiency, consolidation, maximization are all things rolling around in my head all the time. I wake up and baby needs to be changed, baby needs to be fed, mom needs to rest, mom needs to eat, dog needs to go out, dog needs to be fed, dog needs his medicine, etc, etc, etc.

Two days from now feels like four months away. The list is endless. Don’t get me wrong here, this is by no stretch a complaint. I love every moment of it, and I would never trade it. It has shined light on another life, a life lived for someone else. This little beautiful person, this oasis of all the joy in your heart, this portal to all things pure and innocent has shined a major light.

There is a reframing of my efforts each day. Life was reframed when we got married, living for us. It is now reframed again. All of the energy and success and potential in each day with a singular focus. I am sure some of this rings true for those of you that have children. Personal interests are still around, but the reason for them is not the same. I want to be strong for them, for us.

When it comes right down to it. It matters in the increments. The video above is an infamous speech in “Any Given Sunday” by Al Pacino. He is the coach of a football team, and they are having a rough go on the field.

He does a fantastic job illustrating the increments. He is talking about inches, but it’s all the same. If we can stay focused on the small increments in our lives, and our singularity in purpose, I believe we can be successful.

Where are your efforts focused? What are your increments? Do you have them? Go out there and win some of those increments. If you don’t know them, get some and focus those efforts a bit. Do each one well. If it points to your focus, do it. If not, don’t. See you in the increments.
