It’s 6:03am. A young man, headphones in, is barreling down the bike lane on foot. It doesn’t matter that he’s on foot because the street, Montana Avenue, isn’t awake yet. The picturesque Santa Monica haven for boutique shopping and green smoothies will be too lively for such ownership of the road in a few hours, but for now his intensity reigns free. To the trained eye, this pace is both inappropriate and is guaranteed to be short lived.
The contrast of his movement pinned against the quiet backdrop of the neighborhood is exaggerated by arm action that qualifies as overzealous. A technically inclined person would note immediately the failure of his knee to track leaving his foot to swing out to the sides in the back of his strides. He has zero hamstring strength and a laundry list of technical faults that makes his respectful effort difficult to watch.
In truth, running isn’t about pavement pounding. If it was, our man would be the Prime Minister of Pavement Pounding. Technically, this isn’t good. In fact, it’s mechanically horrible.
But, you know what?
We can fix these things. Great hamstrings and an organized stride can’t do much in bed at 6:03am. So, to my overzealous Prime Minister of Morning Movement…
